A summer journey

Stockholm

Nick, Charlie and Brook. A city-and-archipelago week built around ships, islands, food and enough breathing room to prevent sightseeing from becoming work.

Stockholm: July 20–25, 20263 travelersAges 13, 16, adultRental car, selectively used
Flight-confirmed timingSAS arrives at ARN at 16:35 on Monday 20 July (via Copenhagen). Monday is therefore an arrival evening only; the friend’s full Djurgården day moves to Tuesday. The return flight leaves ARN at 09:00 on Saturday 25 July, so Friday is the final full day.

The plan

One anchor activity per half-day, neighborhoods grouped geographically, and central-city days kept car-free. You sleep near Globen Monday–Wednesday, then at James’s Saltsjöbaden house Thursday–Friday.

Monday · July 20

Arrival + Söder dinner

Low energy
16:35

Land at ARN, collect bags + rental car

Arrive on SK 1424 from Copenhagen, then collect the car and drive to the Globen base. Allow for bags, car paperwork and rush-hour traffic; the target is only check-in and a smooth first evening.

Evening

Unpack, short local walk, easy dinner

Leave the car parked. Take the metro or taxi into Söder only if everyone feels up for it; Kvarnen is the practical first-night choice. Make the booking flexible or walk in.

Tuesday · July 21

Bike day on Djurgården

Full but fun
Morning

Bike Globen → Djurgården; Liljevalchs + Vasa

Take the friend’s excellent route on the first real day: bike through Söder and across Djurgårdsbron, visit Liljevalchs, then the Vasa Museum. Book Vasa ahead and do not linger between the two.

Lunch

Rosendals Trädgård

Garden lunch and reset between museums and the ride. Aim to arrive before the busiest summer lunch window.

Afternoon

Djurgården loop

Ride past Waldemarsudde, Blockhusudden, Skansen and Gröna Lund, then return via Djurgårdsbron. This is the scenic way to see the island without adding another ticketed attraction.

Dinner

Kvarnen or a nearby Söder fallback

Kvarnen works especially well after the bike ride: casual, lively, Swedish and on the way home.

Wednesday · July 22

Choose one + James + Freyja

Flexible
Daytime

Choose one headline activity

Best fit: Gröna Lund — Charlie and Brook can stay in one staffed, contained park while Nick meets James nearby. For a culture day, choose Fotografiska or Nationalmuseum; do not try to do both.

Afternoon

Nick’s meeting with James

If you choose a museum rather than Gröna Lund, use Götgatan or the NK/Åhléns area as the older-kid-friendly couple-of-hours alternative.

Dinner

Jenkins family dinner at Freyja

Book the terrace at Freyja for the 360° view. This takes priority over the Thai Festival/IMAX idea.

Thursday · July 23

Move to Saltis + lake day

Outdoor
Morning

Drive to James’s Saltsjöbaden house

Move early, settle in and keep the car. This is its first truly useful day after arrival.

Afternoon

Nacka forest, berries + Källtorpssjön

Walk around Hellasgården / Källtorpssjön, pick blueberries if conditions are right and swim from the lake jetty. Treat any unfamiliar mushroom as a leave-it.

Evening

Kayak from the house dock

Use the house boat first. Kayakomat and Vår Gård are nearby options only if extra kayaks are needed.

Friday · July 24

Archipelago from Saltsjöbaden

Weather dependent
Plan A

Own boat + picnic

Take James’s boat straight from the house. Pick a weather-protected cove and let the water dictate the day.

Plan B / C

Ferry to Rögrund or Sandhamn

Rögrund is the quieter nature choice; Sandhamn has beach, ice cream and more action. Check Waxholmsbolaget the day before — summer routes can require a change.

Evening

Vår Gård sauna + sea dip

Book the sauna package in advance, then pack for the airport before bed.

Saturday · July 25

Departure

No risk
05:30

Leave Saltsjöbaden for ARN

There is no wind-down day: the flight leaves at 09:00. Pack Friday night, allow for fuel and car return, and target the terminal by 07:00.

09:00

SK 403 ARN → CPH → SFO

Check in online 30 hours before departure. Keep booking reference X6U9OX and the rental details offline as well as in email.

Tuesday morning

Vasa Museum entry

Book timed-entry tickets for the Tuesday Djurgården bike day. The museum is the anchor activity of the first full day.

Wednesday dinner

Freyja terrace dinner

Reserve the terrace for the Jenkins-family group. The panoramic view is the occasion — book well ahead.

Friday evening

Vår Gård sauna package

Book the sauna-and-sea-dip package before the final night. Pack for the airport before bed.

Thursday–Friday

Confirm James's boat & kayaks

Send James a quick note to confirm boat, dock kayak and life-vest availability before the lake and archipelago days.

Choose based on wind, boat availability and family energy — not abstract ambition.

The best fit if weather and James’s boat line up: leave directly from the house, bring a picnic and choose a sheltered swimming cove.

The quieter ferry option: nature, a waterside lunch and a smaller-island feel without going into the city first.
